What are the legalities of creating a ringtones or video sharing website?

With the entire corporate world up in arms about copyright, what would the consequences be of setting up such a site? Of course, I wouldn't want to get in the way of rich people becoming richer, and would understand if I got prosecuted for sharing media with "INTENTION-TO-MAKE-PROFIT!!!!" <------- ahh, look its in capitals! ... but I would like to embark on this endeavour out of personal interest. So... are you meant to buy rights somehow? And if you don't what are the consequences?
